Celebrate Scottish Culture at the Highland Games and Heritage Festival

Just a week after the Irish festivities of Saint Patrick's Day, the Highland Games and Heritage Festival returns for its 2nd annual celebration of all things related to Scottish, Celtic, and Gaelic culture. On Friday, March 24, and Saturday, March 25, join the fun in the family-friendly event, which takes place at The Grand Park in Market Common.

Experience the games, foods, music, and traditions of the Highlanders, beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday evening with a Whisky Tasting at Tupelo Honey. Venture over to the Entertainment and Culture Center for a 6 p.m. performance by Ripley's Ruckus Drum Line, followed by SYR at 6:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., enjoy the sounds of Pipe Bands, and then at 8:30, be dazzled by a performance by Celtic Tribal Gypsy rock band Tuatha Dea.

Wake up bright and early on Saturday for a day filled to the brim with exciting events. Gates and vendors open at 9 a.m. At that time, the British Car Show, athletic events, and Kids Glen Games and Crafts all begin and last throughout the day. Head over to the demonstration field at 9:30 a.m. to see what it's like on a Scottish sheep farm with the Border Collie herding demonstration. This demonstration will take place every other hour. At 10 a.m., the opening ceremony will commence and feature Mass Pipe Bands, Blessing of the Games, National Anthems, Introduction of Honored Guests and Clan, and the Tartan Parade on the Main Field. Enjoy whisky tastings and live performances throughout the day, as you immerse yourself into the life of a Highlander!

Athletic events take place all day Saturday and include such events as Open Stone Put, Braemar Stone Put, Hammer Throw, Caber Toss, Sheaf Toss, and Weight for Height. Keep a watch out for world record throws! These heavy athletics hearken back to ancient Scottish times, when clans would compete with one another in this manner to avoid going to war. Participants even perform these great feats while wearing historic garb, including kilts.
