Take a Ride on the Myrtle Beach Skywheel
Celebrating it's sixth year of existence in May, the Myrtle Beach Skywheel has fast become one of the most iconic Grand Strand attractions. Since opening in 2011, the Skywheel has created a striking profile along the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. Locals and visitors alike have fallen in love with the unparalleled views available during a ride on the Skywheel. Here are some fun facts about this impressive piece of machinery:
- Over one million LED lights are installed along the spokes of the Skywheel, creating computerized light shows that dazzle beachgoers nightly
- The Skywheel stands nearly 200 feet tall on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean
- It is the second tallest structure of its kind in the US, and the tallest east of the Mississippi River
- The Skywheel holds 42 air-conditioned gondolas capable of fitting six passengers each
- The Skywheel also features a VIP gondola with glare-free glass, custom leather seats and even a crystal-clear glass floor
- Its design is capable of withstanding 135 mph sustained winds, with the gondolas capable of being removed and stored in only eight hours time
Downstairs, Jimmy Buffet's Land Shark Bar and Grill is a popular hangout, and a great place to grab a drink or some dinner watching the waves roll in. The Skywheel is open daily from 11 am to 12 am.
